What to decide before launching a subscription

A practical starting point for billing periods, renewal communication and access after payment.

Define the offer, not just the interval

Be explicit about what the customer receives, how often they pay and what happens at renewal. A one-year licence sold once is different from an automatically renewing subscription. Product content, pricing and checkout should all describe the same arrangement.

Plan for more than successful payments

Decide how you will handle failed renewals, cancellations and changes to the subscription. Agree the timing of reminders and any grace period before launch. Verify the behaviour supported by your connected payment service rather than assuming every provider offers the same controls.

Connect billing to fulfilment

For a digital subscription, the recurring payment and the right to use the product are related but distinct. Check whether renewal extends an existing entitlement or delivers a new licence. Make the outcome visible in the order and customer account, and confirm what support can do when a renewal needs attention.

Measure the whole relationship

New subscriptions tell only part of the story. Review upcoming renewals, failed payments, cancellations and support demand alongside paid orders. Use those signals to improve the offer and customer communication, rather than judging the subscription solely on its first transaction.
